Flood in Penampang

Tragic October

07th October 2014 was a very gloomy day for Penampang folks as we were hit by one of the worst flood ever occur in our district. It’s all started with none stop down pour for days and the tail-end effects of Typhoon Vongfong. By nine o’clock in the morning, villagers living along Moyog river were starting to save their belonging to a higher place and prepare themselves to face the rising water. In less than an hour, water began to enter most of the lower area in Penampang, such as Kampung Penampang Proper, Kesigui, Tuavon, Kibabaig, Kampung Pagansakan and others. Business premises, government buildings  and schools were also submerged by water. Few landslides occured such as along Jalan Penampang – Tambunan and Jalan Bantayan - Inanam.

The second flood happened two days after but this time only low-lying area such as Kibabaig, Tuavon,  Penampang Proper and others was hit by flood again. A house near the river bank in Kampung Pogunon succumbed in to a dreadful  landslide.  It took about almost two days for the water to subside and more loses were incurred. The aftermath is an eyesore as flood debris and animal carcasses are scattered everywhere. The third flood hits the same low-lying area two weeks after. It has been a very stressful month for Penampang and hope the monsoon rain will be a little bit kind to us.
